Cleveland 63, Mayfield 27 Final

LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO - The last time Cleveland played against Mayfield at the Field of Dreams, The Storm won the 5A State Football Title Game 48-28 in 2011 under then Head Coach Kirk Potter. Fast forward 4 seasons and The Storm have beaten Mayfield at the Field of Dreams again 63-27 and this time the victory comes under Head Coach Heath Ridenour who will be coaching in his first state championship football game as a Head Coach next week against Eldorado.

A 4-yard touchdown run by Ryan Anderson and a 7-yard touchdown run by Shawn Nieto made it a quick 14-0 Storm lead in the 1st quarter. The Storm went up 21-0 in the 2nd quarter after a game-breaking 65-yard touchdown run from New Mexico Lobo Commit Gabe Ortega. Ortega who is a candidate for the NMPreps.com Mr. Football Award would throw for over 200-yards, rush for over 125-yards and score 5 touchdowns in the double digit victory against the Trojans.

Mayfield trailed 35-7 at the half way point, but an 80-yard touchdown run by Isaac Vance brought momentum on the Trojan’s side in the 3rd quarter, then Mayfield intercepted an Ortega pass and scored a few plays later off another Vance touchdown run.

Cleveland would again widen the margin when Ortega threw a beautiful pass to another New Mexico Lobo Commit Marcus Williams to make ti 42-20, then Orega scored early in the 4th quarter to make it 49-27, then after a Trojan fumble, Sophomore Isaac Torres scored from 1-yard out to make it 56-27. The last touchdown of the game was an incredible run after the catch by Williams who made Trojan defenders miss scoring off a 61-yard touchdown from Ortega.

Cleveland is now 12-0 on the season and will host the Eldorado Eagles next weekend for the first ever Metro Big School State Championship Game. The game will be at Cleveland High School because Eldorado and Cleveland have no semifinal or championship playoff history, thus Cleveland hosts because they are the higher seed in the playoffs. The game will likely be Saturday unless the two Head Coaches can agree to play the game Friday Night.

Cleveland and Eldorado met earlier this year with Cleveland winning a wild one 41-34 in front of 11,500 fans which put the stadium at capacity.
